I had an appointment at my doctors office this morning for pre-op. Nothing serious, but while I was there it got me thinking about a few things that I was hoping my doctor would be able to answer for me. Since I am having surgery soon, but I am not a doctor myself, what would be the best scalpel that I could use in order to get the same results at home that I could in the hospital?
Alright. You should know I am not having surgery. But this scenario does bring up an important point when you ask, Why do I need a professional makeup artist?
Just as any other profession requires of a practitioner in order to excel, makeup artistry demands that the artist also be a continuous student. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money to stay educated on the latest trends, techniques, and cosmetic advancements in the industry.
If a professional makeup artist is hired for a job there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that goes unnoticed. A makeup artist works with the director, client, wardrobing, lighting, etc. to insure that the job not only runs smoothly, but to help with any bumps along the way.
If there is a particular vision or concept for the job that the makeup artist has been hired for, a majority of the preparation work is in the hands of the artist in order to guaranty that the right choice of colors, skin care, and hair products are on set. If a client can not be met with prior to a job, then the makeup artist must prepare for that as well. Special considerations from allergies to weather have to be taken into account. On average a makeup artist will arrive with a kit containing $8,000 worth of cosmetics and skincare with a total investment of products often 5 to 7 times that amount.
So if you are wondering if a makeup artist is worth the investment, ask yourself if you can afford not to have a professional working for you on one of your biggest days.
